What type of veins can be treated with laser therapy?
Spider veins on the face and legs bother millions of people. Spider veins (or telangiectasias) are red, bluish or purple veins than can result from sun exposure, use of oral contraception, hormone therapy, the aging process, or heredity. Advanced laser technology offers an effective treatment for facial and spider veins. And we now offer treatment with this technology in our office.

How does a laser help?
With a beam of light, the laser can deliver a prescribed dose of energy to the spider veins. The laser "selectively" coagulates the problem veins while sparing surrounding areas. Because the laser energy is absorbed by melanin in the epidermis as well as the desired target of hemoglobin, the SmartCool system is used to cool and protect the epidermis. Multiple treatments may be necessary to obtain a satisfactory response for some leg veins. After treatment, the vessel slowly and naturally disappears.

How many treatments are required?
Results are seen within three to four weeks. Typically, one to three treatments are recommended. In some cases, new spider veins may appear, therefore, additional treatments may be necessary. Treatments are at 8 week intervals.

Can we be sure that this will work on my veins?
This is something that must be determined with each patient individually, but the majority of patients will benefit from this treatment.
What does it feel like?
Although many patients report little or no discomfort, some may experience a mild stinging sensation when the laser pulse is delivered.

Is this treatment difficult?
No. This non-invasive treatment process takes between 15 minutes to 1/2 hour, depending on the size and number of vessel(s)to be treated. After treatment, there is no down time – which means you can resume all of your normal activities immediately afterward. We do, however, ask that you refrain from vigorous exercise and avoid hot tubs for at least 24 hours post treatment. Also, avoid direct sun exposure after treatment and if you do go in the sun, protect the treated area with a minimum SPF 30 Sun Block (not sunscreen).
